We climbed into the boats and got ready to leave. Even though we had no idea exactly how the river ran, it was clear that we should head upstream.

We left one of the three boats with the dead dark elves in it. Slayer and Garek had each armed themselves with a short sword and a hand crossbow. Destroyer had found a short throwing knife on one of the dark elves. I gave Octavianus the mace I had taken from the temple of the dark elves. His subclass would not allow him to carry any bladed weapons, as he explained. He also strapped one of the small shields to his wrist.

It took us a while to find our way out of the labyrinth of passages and grottos, but eventually we reached the main stream of the river again and continued rowing against the current.

The river here ran in a wide, shallow bed, so the current was less strong. Eventually, the passage walls moved farther and farther apart, widening into a large cave. To our left, a rocky shore emerged.

Further upstream, sharp stones jutted out of the river, indicating that we had passed the navigable part of the river.

Slayer and Garek looked at me questioningly. I nodded. Whether we liked it or not, we would have to land here.

We carefully steered the boats toward the shore. A closer look showed that one spot was particularly well suited for landing. Someone had removed the larger rocks here, so that one could simply pull the boats over the small pebbles which covered the shore.

Cautiously, we got out of our vessels and looked around. Some depressions in the gravel indicated that occasionally large creatures were leaving their impressive footprints here on the shore.

A dull sound, like the falling of a stone from a great height, reached our ears and made us cringe.

Nervously, we looked around. Slayer, Garek, and I each held one of the hand crossbows. At short range, we could shoot an effective first volley with them.

"Honey, something is coming," Áinfean whispered.

"Look out!" I called out to the others in a hushed voice.

A noise approached us, but I could not detect anything. Only when I turned my gaze to the cave ceiling between the stalactites hanging down from there, did I perceive some movement.

Something large was swinging up there from stalactite to stalactite with powerful, if awkward-looking movements.

Finally, the creature jumped down through the air towards us and landed on the stones a few steps in front of me.

What I saw sent an icy shiver down my spine.

The creature was built like a lean monkey—with long arms that reached down to the ground. Its skin was a shimmering greenish color with milky warts, wrinkles, and body hair that resembled moss. The fingers of its hands ended in three-inch-long claws.

Its head was rather small in relation to the rest of its body, but it had a protruding jaw from which pointed canine teeth gleamed.

Grinning, the huge creature gaped at me, drool dripping from its half-open mouth.
